Learning Objectives 

  1. Develop an understanding of the types of early age concrete cracking and associated cracking patterns
  2. Learn about the causes of early age cracking patterns
  3. Discover how early age cracking can be diagnosed and prevented by reviewing several case studies

Abstract: Early Age Concrete Cracking 

The development of early age cracking and the primary contributing factors will be discussed, including plastic shrinkage, autogenous shrinkage, subsidence, and thermal effects. The typical cracking patterns associated with each type of early age cracking will also be discussed. Several case studies will be presented, which will include a brief overview of each project and a summary of the field investigation, laboratory studies, and recommendations. 

About the Speakers

Tracy Perry, PE - Since receiving a BS and MS from the Colorado School of Mines, she has worked at WJE for 19 years, specializing in the evaluation and repair of concrete structures. With the assistance of WJE’s petrographers, she specializes in assessing concrete quality issues and deterioration as well as specifying the appropriate repair techniques.

Terry McGovern, PE - He receivd his BS and MS in civil engineering from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI and ha worked in WJE's Denver office for 11 years.  Since joining WJE, Terry has worked on numerous concrete assessment and repair projects.  He is a member of ACI Committees 546, Repair of Concrete and 563, Repair of Structural Concrete in Buildings.
