About the Topic

Have you ever noticed that we often lose air while pumping air entrained concrete? This presentation will explain why the air is lost and then why the air will come back before the concrete hardens. This work is based on an extensive laboratory study and a field study from more than 60 field statistics. This research uses measurements of fresh air volume, Super Air Meter Number, hardened air volume and spacing factor, and freeze thaw performance from concrete before and after pumping. This work has led to changes in several state specifications.

About the Speaker

Tyler Ley, Ph.D., P.E., has more than 20 years of experience in the fields of structural and concrete materials engineering.  During this time, he has worked as an engineer with a design consultant, construction contractor, government agency, and as a professor. This practical experience has made him a better teacher and researcher.

Tyler Ley enjoys teaching.  Some of the awards that he has received include: the Halliburton Excellent Young Teaching Award in 2011, the Williams Foundation Professor in 2013 for the College of Engineering, the ACI Walter P. Moore Faculty Achievement Award in 2014, the Researcher of the Year Award from the College of Engineering in 2014, Halliburton Excellent Young Professor in 2014, the OSU Regents Research Award in 2014, and the ACPA Martin J. Knutson Award in 2017 and was named the outstanding professor at a research university by the Oklahoma Foundation of Excellence in 2018. He was also named one of the Most Influential People in the Concrete Industry by Concrete Construction Magazine in 2019.
In the last 12 years at Oklahoma State University he has received over $9.1M as PI and $4.7M.  This includes the NSF Career Award in 2012 and three FHWA Exploratory Advanced Research Grants.  He has received funding from industry, state, private, and federal sources.  Several of Tyler Ley’s projects have created innovative products that have led to patent applications and changes in National Codes and Standards.

Tyler Ley is very active in the American Concrete Institute where he is a voting member of the Concrete Durability, Material Science, Concrete Proportioning, and Sustainability Technical committees. In addition, he serves on the executive committee of the National Concrete Consortium, a group made up of DOT engineers from 35 different states.  He also served as the president of the American Ceramics Society Cements Division in 2016.  Tyler Ley has a passion for creating innovative learning content.  His websites are visited by over 50,000 people per year and his education content on YouTube has been watched over 3 million times.
