Effective Use of Chemical Admixtures to Mitigate Cracking Due to Drying Shrinkage and ASR
About the Presentation
Chemical admixtures are an essential component of concrete mixtures today and they can provide a wide range of benefits in both fresh and hardened concrete.  This presentation will focus on the use of durability-enhancing admixtures to mitigate cracking in concrete specifically due to drying shrinkage and alkali-silica reaction (ASR).  Topics to be covered will include the mechanisms by which these admixtures function, their effects on the fresh and hardened properties of concrete, and case histories highlighting their use in the field.

About the Speaker
Dr. Charles Nmai is Engineering Associate/Manager, Engineering Services within the Admixture Systems group of BASF Corporation in Beachwood, Ohio.  With over 26 years of extensive experience in admixtures, fibers, high-performance concretes, concrete durability and troubleshooting, he has authored/co-authored numerous papers and lectures frequently on these subjects.  He is actively involved in technology transfer activities related to chemical admixtures and self-consolidating concrete (SCC) and spearheaded the development of a comprehensive FHWA seminar on SCC to facilitate acceptance and use by State Departments of Transportation.  He also played a lead role in the development of a FHWA seminar on Chemical Admixtures and is an instructor for this seminar as well as the "Troubleshooting Concrete Construction" seminar offered by the American Concrete Institute (ACI).  In 2013, he joined the World of Concrete seminar faculty as the instructor for a 3-hour seminar titled "Effective Use of Chemical Admixtures in Concrete Construction" which he developed.

Dr. Nmai is a fellow of ACI, an active member of several ACI committees, and a past member of the ACI Board of Direction.  He is also an honorary member of ASTM International and currently, chair of ASTM Subcommittee C09.23 on Chemical Admixtures and Vice-President of the Fiber-Reinforced Concrete Association (FRCA).
